03.05.09 | Artificial reefs

In March 2008, the Fishery department of the Balearic government installed at the east coast of Majorca, from Cape Pinar up to Cape Ses Salines, a series of concrete blocks forming a barrier. Its purpose is to dissuade passing ships who drag fishing nets near to the coast. As well, at 5 nautical miles from Cala Bona and on a sandy bottom at 22 metres depth, two series of 14 blocks were installed forming an artificial reef for the development of several species. One year after, we have checked out its structures, a series of piled up concrete cubes with one and a half metres face open on five sides, completely covered with all kind of organisms, plants and animals. Now, you can find there a huge quantity of nudibranches and various species of fishes like two-banded sea breams, zebra sea breams, picarels and the greater amberjack.
